Angelico is a calming, positive and friendly presence in our Parramatta Social Team, and perhaps that’s why he was awarded the ‘Socialite of the Year’ award in 2025.
Since joining Avenue last year, shortly after finishing school, Angelico’s confidence has grown in leaps and bounds, and it’s really showing in his social interactions and overall demeanour.
Carlee, Avenue’s community engagement lead, has noticed the improvement.
“When he first started, he wouldn’t really make eye contact or initiate conversations. Now he’s chatting with everyone – staff and peers alike,” said Carlee.
“He’s developed so much confidence in such a short time. You can see how comfortable he feels here.”
Carlee isn’t the only person to notice this uplift in confidence and wellbeing – she notes that the feedback from Angelico’s mum has also been overwhelmingly positive. “Mum is really happy with him here. She loves that he’s having fun.”
Empowering growth through fun
Avenue’s Social Program is unique in that it combines fun activities with skill building opportunities – strategically empowering participants to achieve personal growth.
The social coordinators take a thoughtful, two-step approach when developing the monthly social calendar. First, the team identifies activities that offer strong learning and development opportunities. Then, participant feedback is used to shape which activities are ultimately included.
This approach leads to stronger engagement and, in turn, supports meaningful personal growth and overall well-being – just as Angelico has experienced.
Making friends along the way
Angelico’s increased confidence has led to some blossoming friendships at Avenue. “I like to hang out with Riley,” said Angelico. “He has also formed a nice friendship with Jessica,” added Carlee.
Angelico has also been embracing some new activities, “My favourite is boxing. I also like cooking – we made soup this week.” Other activities Angelico has participated in recently include tennis, karaoke and trampolining.
Along with building confidence and friendships, Angelico has been developing independence through everyday activities. He’s recently been tasked with being the group’s time keeper while out on social activities – keeping the group on track and ensuring everyone knows the public transport times needed to keep the day running smoothly.
A confident path ahead
Angelico’s growth is clear to see. Through new friendships, confidence, and responsibilities like timekeeping and navigating public transport, he is developing practical skills while fully engaging with his peers.
“It’s been really lovely watching him grow. He’s become more verbal and more confident connecting with others,” said Carlee.
His journey at Avenue highlights the impact of supportive programs and thoughtfully designed activities in helping people thrive.
