Avenue support worker shortlisted for national “Person-Led Practice” award

November 6, 2025

Christine Casinader from Avenue Parramatta has been named one of just five national finalists in the Australian Disability Services Awards, in the category ‘Person-Led Practice in Action Support Worker’.

This is a remarkable recognition of Christine’s genuine dedication to person-centred support, and the entire Avenue community will be cheering her on when the winners are announced on 13 November.

Christine says the most rewarding part of her work is seeing participants grow and evolve over time. One participant she supports has made incredible progress in her expressive language, and even in driving her wheelchair, since Christine began working with her. “I find it very self-satisfying to see a client grow or evolve over time,” Christine explains. “It’s amazing to witness their achievements, no matter how big or small.”

Her manager, Ravi, highlights that Christine’s greatest strength lies in how she personalises support for each participant. “Whether it’s breaking tasks into achievable steps, weaving in learning opportunities like number or letter recognition, or offering small but meaningful choices – like deciding between stairs or the lift – Christine ensures that every participant feels supported, capable, and in control of their own day,” he says.

For those starting out in support work, Christine offers practical advice: take time to prepare, observe, and empower participants to attempt tasks, even if they’re challenging. “Sometimes we need to challenge participants so they can reach their true potential,” she says. “It’s not always about having a good time, but recognising that they can try even if they don’t achieve the end result. The process matters – even if it doesn’t happen, it can still be a win.”

Beyond her professional dedication, Christine has a fun side too – she’s a huge Eurovision fan. And with her recent recognition, it seems she’s taking centre stage herself.

Christine’s passion, care, and skill exemplify the values that make Avenue and Fighting Chance such special communities. We are incredibly proud to have her representing us on a national stage, and we wish her the very best of luck for the awards.

Good luck Christine – we’re all behind you!
